OVERVIEW

The Department of Agricultural Extension has been established since the inception of Balochistan Agriculture College, Quetta in 1987. Up till now the Department has produced a large number of Graduate & Post-Graduate students who are serving in all nation building departments. The Department offers B.Sc. (Hons.) Agriculture and M.Sc. (Hons.) Agriculture Degree Programs.

The Department of Agricultural Extension prepares students to overcome farming problems systematically and objectively, and to come up with practical solutions. It seeks to equip students for a wide range of roles in the private sector as well as in public sector. The goal of Agriculture Extension is to improve the quality of our farmers’ life through sustainable agriculture. This necessitates a change in his attitudes and practices if they constrain his production or degrade his productive resources. The Department of Agriculture Extension is playing a crucial role in the development of agriculture sector – not only by disseminating recommended technology among the farming community, but also by bringing back the farmers’ problems to the researchers. To bring about a change in attitude of farmers is a basic educational function of Agricultural Extension Department.

OBJECTIVES

The main objectives of the department are to prepare students to:

  1. Improve agriculture and raise the level of living of farmers in Pakistan.
  2. Improve the yield per acre and quality of crops.
  3. Bring about desirable changes in farming practices through persuasion.
  4. Help farmers to help themselves. Encourage farmers to use the recommended practices.

The main focus of offered courses by the Department of Agriculture Extension are clarify the concept of extension education, understand the role of agricultural extension in agricultural and rural development, gain the knowledge required to be an effective extension worker, and learn about the present working of extension services in Pakistan.
